Part III: The Old Testament

This is Part III of a series on the Old Testament.

The Restored Church’s website has a treasure trove of books and talks about the Old Testament. Today, I just wanted to go over the first chapter of Genesis.

Before diving into the scriptures though, I want to add this disclaimer.

“Not all scripture is created equal.”

By that, I mean that some things included in scriptures are pure history. They will not have an impact on your life.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Let’s do an exercise…. Read 2 Kings 11. Then, read Matthew 5. Which of these chapters teaches you more truth? Which chapter has a greater affect on you? See what I mean?

When you read the scriptures, ask yourself: “What can I get out of this? How does this affect me?” Read the scriptures with scrutiny. Be an active participant in your learning from the scriptures. Write questions down.

That being said, today, I’m going to go over Genesis Chapter 1. I’m going over this chapter because there is a lot of important truths taught in this chapter about the Plan of Salvation.

These scriptures are taken from the King James version of the Bible (as posed on the website of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Verse Scripture Comment
1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

How important is that statement! It’s the first verse in the Bible.

How many billions of people don’t recognize that simple truth.

Contrary to what science (or the Devil for that matter) would have you believe, the universe was NOT created by a BIG BANG. Our collective existence was not chance–not a roll of the dice.

The probability of everything being created the way that it was is too astronomically high to calculate.

Please, don’t fall for the nonsense taught in some schools. Contrary to what is typically taught, the earth was created for a purpose: For the Children of God to inhabit it, so we could receive bodies of flesh and bone and be tested–to see whether we’d prove ourselves worthy to return and live with Him.

Your life has a purpose. You will not cease to exist when you die. Death is not the end.

2

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

God, The Great Jehovah, Jesus Christ, the Son of God (our elder brother) had a Spirit. Before He became God in the flesh, Jesus Christ was only a Spirit (like us).

3

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

God has a body. God can speak. He has a mouth. He has a face, a nose, eyes, and ears. He looks like us. He has a body.

How many people think of God as something without form? This is a misconception that is not true. He has a body. He is a person.

God has power. He can command the elements.

4

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

God caused the earth to rotate.

5

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

God made the atmosphere.

8

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12

And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13

And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

God created the planets

He caused the earth to tilt ~23.5 degrees, so we’d have seasons.

As a measure of time, he made the earth rotate around the sun, so we could measure time.

15

And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16

And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

God made the sun and the moon. God made the stars too.

17

And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18

And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19

And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

God caused evolution to occur.

21

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

God set limits on evolution. “God created”…”after their kind”….

22

And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23

And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24

And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25

And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

“Let us”…. Who was the “us”? It was Heavenly Father and Jesus talking.

Heavenly Father is a man. Jesus Christ is a man.

“God” is a name. “God” is also a title. Heavenly Father is a God. Jesus Christ is a God. There are only a few references in the scriptures in which Heavenly Father speaks (which will be pointed-out later).

When the scriptures speak of God or when God is talking, the person speaking in the Old Testament is Jesus Christ (or Jehovah) as he was called before he was born.

27

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

When God created the first man and woman, they were formed in his image.

This is something we can all relate to: children look like their parents. Children are “in the image of” their parents.

We are all children of our Heavenly Father. He is the Father of our Spirits. We are in his image.

Contrary to what the Devil would have you believe, we did not evolve from apes.

28

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

This is the first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve: “[T]o Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth”….

This is part of the Plan of Salvation. God, our Heavenly Father, is giving us the opportunity to be like Him to have a family/children.

Children are an inheritance from the Lord. They are precious. They are his Spirit children. We will be held accountable to Him for how we treat them (and eachother, because we are all a child a God. EVERYONE IS A CHILD OF GOD.

29

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

In conclusion, it’s a shame that so many people don’t bother to read or understand the first chapter of the Bible. There are so many important truths taught:

  • God created the earth, the sun, moon, planets, and stars.
  • God gave us day-and-night and seasons.
  • God created the atmosphere, plants, and animals.
  • Heavenly Father is a person. Jesus Christ is a person. They have bodies. They are people. “God” is not a void “thing” without form. God created the first man and women. We were created in the image of God. We have His likeness. The notion that man evolved is false.
  • God gave the first man and woman a commandment: To procreate. Procreation, having families, having children, is part of God’s Plan for us. Following His Plan will bring us the most happiness in this life.
